Open-Faced Chicken Meatball Gyro

Written by Zee Zee's | Sep 2, 2026, 6:24:57 PM

There is something about a warm pita piled with savory meatballs and cool, creamy tzatziki that turns an ordinary lunch into an event. The Open-Faced Chicken Meatball Gyro takes that Mediterranean classic and reworks it for the cafeteria, layering oregano-seasoned Zee Kitchen Original Chicken Meatballs over soft whole grain pita with crisp romaine, cucumber, tomato, and a sprinkle of feta. Scaled to serve 100, it hands students a fresh, pick-it-up-and-go meal that feels a world away from the everyday line.

Our team built the recipe around real school kitchens and a simple thought: global flavor can be adventurous and completely approachable at the same time.

On the tray, each gyro credits as 2 M/MA, 2¼ Grains, and ⅜ cup of vegetables spread evenly across the dark green, red/orange, and other subgroups. Together, these components make a complete, reimbursable lunch students will enjoy.

MVP Ingredient Spotlight

Everything here is built around our NEW! Zee Kitchen Original Chicken Meatballs (#626249).

These halal-friendly chicken meatballs belong to Zee Kitchen’s Meatball for All line, which comes in Original, Taco, and Buffalo. The Original leans savory, so it sits comfortably alongside the oregano and tzatziki instead of fighting them for attention, and three meatballs credit as a full 2 M/MA. Bake them until hot and juicy, set them on the pita just before it heads to the line, and a few cafeteria staples suddenly read as a lunch worth showing up for.

That range is the whole point of Meatball for All. One protein, seasoned to work for as many students as possible, ready to carry a gyro today and a sub, bowl, or pasta bake next week. Your kitchen gets one dependable building block, and more kids get a tray that feels like someone planned it with them in mind.

Why We Love It (And You Will Too)

Put this on the menu once and the question you will hear is when it is coming back. Here is what makes it work:

Global flavor that still feels familiar
Gyros carry the bright, herby taste of Mediterranean street food, and this version keeps all of it within reach for students. Nothing needs explaining at the line, just a delicious lunch that introduces new flavors in a format students already recognize. Turn lunch into a Mediterranean adventure by pairing the gyro with a 3oz Zee Zees Hummus Cup to encourage dipping, exploration, and globally inspired flavors. Together, the gyro and hummus provide ¾ cup of vegetables, an easy way for K-8 operators to meet the daily vegetable contribution target, while high schools can add additional vegetables to round out the meal.

Made for the pace of service
Most of the effort lands during prep. Pitas get built ahead, the meatballs bake in one pass, and the only move left at service is spooning them on hot. Nothing sits, nothing stalls, and the line keeps moving.

One protein, more kids at the table
Because the meatballs are halal-friendly, a single batch reaches a wider range of students without a second line or a separate recipe. That means an easier shift for your staff and a more welcoming tray for the kids you serve.

Room to make it your own

  • Trade the Original meatballs for Taco or Buffalo when you want to shake up the flavor.
  • Reach for a gluten-free pita to bring the gyro onto gluten-free menus.
  • Choose a dairy-free tzatziki and leave off the feta to open it up to even more diets.

Built to catch the eye
Green romaine, red tomato, crisp cucumber, and a ribbon of tzatziki over three golden meatballs create a colorful, appealing presentation that makes it an easy choice for students.
