Meet the Smart Snacks Standards

Almost a quarter of kids’ daily calories can come from snacks, so why not give them nutritious, tasty choices to support their growing bodies? To sell snacks during school meal programs, the snack or entrée needs to meet the Smart Snack standards.

General Nutrition Standards:

  • First listed ingredient is a vegetable, fruit, protein, or dairy item.
  • Grain-based product made with 50% or more whole grains by weight.
  • Combination food with at least ¼ cup of fruit and/or vegetable.

Calories ≤ 200 ≤ 350
Sodium ≤ 200 mg ≤ 480 mg

Entree

What is an Entrée?

Smart Snacks for Entrée is the main dish of the meal and is a combination of:
  • Meats/meat alternates + fruits OR vegetables OR whole grain-rich food.
  • Meats/meat alternates alone, except for a few categories.
  • Whole grain-rich entrée served as the main dish of the School Breakfast Program.

Flexibility for Entrees Served

Sometimes you may have leftovers that were served for the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) or the School Breakfast Program (SBP). Any entrees that were served for NSLP or SBP can be sold the same day and the day after as a Smart Snack item. Less waste, more taste!
